It is twelve noon on September 13th, 1862 and the Army of the Potomac has finally brought the Army of Northern Virginia to ruin. After 67 turns of a nail-biting game, Lee concedes that he has been outmanoeuvred and beaten.
The VP chart tells the story. By riding around in the Union rear (pretty much unopposed I have to say!) JEB Stuart gained about 80% of the objective points that were up for grabs - the Union finished with only 40 remaining out of an initial 250. But it wasn't enough. The Rebs also gave McClellan's artillery some very rough handling - but that wasn't enough either!

Lee's right flank - scene of a brief victorious moment earlier in the game !

So where did it all go wrong ? Well, first I will bleat on pathetically about the factors that were stacked against me ! The scenario involved historically sized armies so that McClellan had 30,000 more men than Lee, even though Rebel troops were of marginally better quality than their enemy. Secondly, at all scales of the game the mechanics don't allow for a player who is not faring well to disengage and live to fight another day. Historically a victorious force would be as exhausted and demoralised as it's opponent and the two sides would simply disengage, without the losing force being completely destroyed (we hope to find a way to address this in future).

Okay - that's the moaning done ! Playing as McClellan, my brother Ian simply came up with a brilliant strategy and pursued it doggedly until he beat me. After a bit of a clumsy initial deployment, I arrived at an excellent defensive position, making good use of terrain and artillery LOS. On the morning of day two Longstreet's men launched a surprise attack on the Union left, which I know seriously rattled him and threw a spanner in the works. So, faced with all this Ian decided not to tackle any of the Confederate main position head on at all ! He shifted his weight north west to Williamsport where he pulverized D.H.Hill for a massive VP haul. When I shifted half of Longstreet's men over to that flank to try and deal with the situation he was simply ready for them with most of his army solidly in place.

Ian's plan was already good but I generously helped him him out with two massive blunders. I simply didn't think he would attack D.H.Hill with virtually ALL of his army, so I left Hill vulnerable. And when Ian passed his army across the front of my main position in order to get to Williamsport, I just sat there paralysed in my 'good defensive position' and let him do it, when I could have attacked.

A well earned and convincing victory for the Army of the Potomac. Check out Ian's celebrations at :
Although this has failed to yield a decisive VP total at the moment, it certainly will in the long term. I am pushing out Lee's left wing in reponse but it is too little, too late I think.
The strategic situation at 9:00 am. Three things to note : there is a build up of Union forces to dislodge D.H.Hill from Williamsport : McClellan is refusing the left flank of the Army of the Potomac in response to the hammering it took in Longstreet's dawn assault : and in the bizarre absence of any Yankee troopers, Stuart has made a beeline for Funkstown.

Williamsport is under immense pressure. It is unlikely that we can hold it, but we can certainly make the Yankees pay for every street and building - and of course one Reb DIVISION is tying up two Union CORPS !! In truth, my opponent is reckoning on surrounding and eliminating D.H.Hill for a massive VP reward, and I have stupidly allowed it to happen by being too cocky.

Stuart's men have been feinting and manoeuvring behind Union lines to cause maximum anxiety. I expected huge numbers of Pleasonton's troopers to show up and put a stop to it - but they never did! So now the Reb cavalry is off to Funkstown.
I feel that the whole weight of the engagement may be shifting west. This can be easily and swiftly done without disturbing the main front we are presenting to the enemy, but the downside is that Anderson's division is weakened and fatigued by the morning's combat.

The Yankees counterattacked from the east, probing for Anderson's flank, and a handful of Reb units skedaddled - but the main line held and continued to slug it out. Eventually we were rewarded by a massive number of Union routs, but it barely impacted the effectiveness of their front line as there are always more soldiers in blue to plug the gaps.
Here are the in game statistics as of Turn 49, which is 6:00 am on Sept the 13th. I know from bitter experience that when the Army of the Potomac is given time and space to marshal it's overwhelming resources against a static enemy it can be hard to beat.

The divisions were moved into place before midnight and have been
recovering from their night-move fatigue ever since - it is now 3:00am on Sept 13th.

So I need to be a bit unpredictable and keep McClellan off balance. In the early hours of the night I pushed Anderson's division and most of McLaws division back out to Tilghmanton - a position they abandoned earlier in the day. It looked to me as if the Union left flank was up in the air and I might be able to take advantage of that. I have nervously made a deployment to assault the location where the extreme enemy flank was observed to be in daylight. Two things could go horribly wrong with this plan ...........

Is the Union flank still where it was, between the Emmet and Maddox houses just north of the town ?
I will have to wait for dawn to find out if my plan is crazy or not !

McClellan may may shifted or refused that flank in the darkness leaving me poised to attack .... nothing ! Or he may have massively reinforced it and I will be committed to assault against unfavourable odds. But if he has just left it as it was in the afternoon then I may be in with a chance of dealing him a hammerblow and taking the initiative away from him. My instinct is that his attention (and the weight of his army) is focussed on the opposite flank, nearer Williamsport.
D.H.Hill has finally completely cleared the Yankee cavalry out of Williamsport, and established himself on the East bank of the Potomac. It has been a slow process though, and I would have preferred him to be in a better position to threaten either Hagerstown or McClellan's flank before nightfall. Regardless of that, I am still willing to bet that he is making the Union commander nervous!
Lee is patiently assembling his battle lines. It will be limited visibility from 7pm to 8pm then nightfall, after which any kind of movement carries a high cost in fatigue. The Confederates cannot compete with massed long-range Federal artillery so much of my deployment is an attempt to avoid those fields of fire.
A tactic I have developed in previous games is to spread the rebel artillery thinly around the entire front line, stacking it with entrenched infantry to beef up their firepower in defence. This has proven to be a better use of it than getting into a large scale counter-battery combat that I can only lose. The artillery should mostly be in position before dark.
Jones' division of Jackson's command is still moving up through Downsville, having been delayed by unusually audacious Union cavalry ! The left flank will not be fully secure until it is in place. Longstreet also has a division under a different General Jones which is being deployed as a reserve just north of Mount Moriah.

Christmas festivities over - back to the battlefield! As more and more Union forces arrived at Jones Crossroads I remembered the massive disparity in artillery between the two armies. Yankee artillery units are mostly 6 guns, predominantly rifled weapons with massive ranges - stack three or four of those in hex and you can rout enemy units by artillery fire only. The Rebs quite often have artillery counters of only 2 or 3 guns with half the range. I decided that the Confederate position at Tilghmanton was becoming too exposed to massed Union batteries and began to withdraw Longstreet's forces to the west.
Union columns are also advancing on Jones Crossroads from the south, creating a big tactical headache for Longstreet. The good news is that JEB Stuart's cavalry has been rampaging across that area, destroying limbered guns and supply wagons on the roads and generally causing delay and mayhem.
It is now Turn 17 - 1:20pm on 12th September. Multiple engagements are developing across a broad front. Firstly - D.H. Hill has been attempting to force a crossing of the Potomac at Williamsport but the river and general terrain here are making it easy for large numbers of Yankee Cavalry and horse guns to delay us substantially. Artillery has been brought up, but Hill has diverted part of his column back down the western side of the Potomac towards Lee and Jackson's crossing point at Falling Waters a few miles south.
But the main event is shaping up to be at Jones Crossroads, some five miles north of Sharpsburg on the Hagerstown/Sharpsburg Pike. D.H.Hill is now on the west bank preparing to cross at Williamsport. His men captured a Union cavalry officer who had stopped for a pee in the bushes, obviously completely unaware that an entire enemy division was coming up the pike from the south! McClellan finally seems to realise that Rebel forces are attempting to cross at multiple locations, and Pleasonton's troopers appear to be criss-crossing the landscape like headless chickens trying to make sense of it all ....
Another corps is moving northwest towards Williamsport, and quite probably yet another could be making due north for Hagerstown. As McClellan is being unexpectedly aggressive, Lee needs to consolidate his army quickly to avoid being caught at a numerical disadvantage - I am thinking maybe in the area just east of Downsville.

As Longstreet continues to push his divisions northwards up through Sharpsburg to meet with Lee and Jackson, more and more Union infantry are starting to appear just beyond Antietam Creek, a little too close to the town for comfort. Stuart's troopers are starting to incur some losses holding them at bay, and it could be that elements of Longstreet's command will have to deploy soon to counter this. I don't really want to get into a major engagement here.
It is a scenario constructed by ourselves in the editor program of the HPS computer game 'Antietam', representing Robert E. Lee's invasion of Maryland in 1862 - hypothetical deployments and open-ended gameplay. Various Union towns provide modest numbers of Victory Points to the South, but the main strategic object of the game is a convincing defeat of your opponent's army. I am playing Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.

The initial Confederate strategy involves multiple thrusts across the Potomac River to seize as many VP sites as possible, and then with that advantage combine forces to fight a defensive battle on our own terms. McClellan has a numerical advantage of roughly 30,000 men, so we must try and keep him in the dark, spread out and off balance !

The concluding turns of the Battle of Cutlers Farm - which you can find analysed in detail at http://wargameswithmybrother.blogspot.co.uk - have been played out, and General Pope has managed to triumph over the Army of Northern Virginia. He has won the second battle in a row and gained the total of 10 VPs that he needed to claim a campaign victory. A bitter pill for the Rebels to swallow and, as I have been frequently heard to say (since about 1964) just after I have been trounced yet again on the battlefield by my brother ... " How can anyone stand against the industrial might and infinite manpower resources of the economically dominant yet spiritually bankrupt North ...? "

A complicated post-mortem is unecessary this time - there were no tactical errors or massive sequences of unfavourable die rolls ! General Lee had used up all his command points conducting a 'clever' manoeuvre around the Union northern flank on the strategic map, and bamboozled by his own brilliance he didn't think it necessary to spend command points on restoring the combat effectiveness of Anderson's division. Consequently it was not present on table, with er,.... Lee arrogantly assuming he could work his magic without it. The Rebs fielded 20 infantry brigades, 2 cavalry brigades and 9 batteries against Pope's 27 infantry brigades, 5 cavalry brigades and 14 batteries - and the mathematical result, to paraphrase Dicken's Mr Micawber .... "misery" !

The Battle of Cutler's Farm is well under way - both sides started with a big chunk of their forces deployed and only half a mile apart, so the action became intense very quickly. From bottom left to top right you can see Starke's entire division - the brigades of Winder, Jones, Taliaferro and Field forming a solid line that links to A.P.Hill's flank in the distance. The two divisions are advancing against Ricketts and Doubleday (McDowell's III Corps attached to Pope from the AOP) on either side of the Cutler farmhouse.

The plan (such as it is!) will be to pressure Ian along the entire front and keep him off balance, hopefully forcing him to commit his substantial reserves to the wrong place. I have detached Ewell from Jackson and sent him to support Hood in a sweeping flank manoeuvre round the Barnes Farm on our left towards the main Sharpeville road. I have already seen a sweating courier lashing his horse to carry this news back to Union HQ!

Walker's artillery is just arriving at the centre of the Confederate line ( there will be no repeat of the artillery fiasco in the last game!), but the centre remains our weak point and I think Ian may have registered this. The good news is that the inital rounds of combat have slightly favoured the Rebs. But we have no reserves - it will be touch and go.

It is 8:00am on the second day (turn 21) and this will be the tabletop situation for the Rebs as the battle begins. You may notice that the bottom half of this table was the top half of the previous table !
Longstreet has the divisions of Hood and Wilcox ( formerly Kemper's) fully deployed, with Fitzhugh Lee's troopers on their eastern flank. Anderson does not have enough command points to enter the battlefield area, nor would his 'battle weary' status make it advisable.

Robertson's cavalry is off-table to the west - again, not enough command points to take part in the action. Of Jackson's Corps, Ewell will come on by road with Lee and the artillery at 8:00 - A.P.Hill and Starke will enter in battle line at 8:30 a little further west . I don't know exactly what we are going to encounter, but it's all or nothing now !

We will probably call this one the Battle of Cutler's Farm, to distinguish it from the previous battle fought over partly the same terrain. Hopefully we will get to start it this week.Dry Stonewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980592495958797602noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1906649324146622178.post-91150656840727459142013-04-24T04:39:00.001-07:002013-04-24T04:47:25.306-07:00Sharpeville Campaign - Turn 20

7:30 am - and Lee has decided to take the initiative, creating a contact in the map square north of the Barnes House. If Pope withdraws from that contact then the Confederates gain a campaign VP. If he decides to give battle then all the possible tabletop configurations will be acceptable to us. I am fairly confident (but then I was last time!), with the only negative being that Anderson's Division is still not in a good enough condition to be much use in combat, and will have to sit this one out.

I am pretty sure that Ian will fight. He has another two divisions in the Cutler House square (scouted last turn) and probably more troops west of there and at Sharpeville, currently beyond my scouting range. Buford's troopers have been quite effective in their screening of Pope's extended deployment.

Divisional names in red text indicate they are deployed for battle.

The night turn is complete and this is the situation at dawn from the Confederate perspective. The last few turns have been spent inching around the Union northern flank trying to look for, or create, a situation where it might be favourable to engage. So many command points have been used up by movement and scouting that Anderson's division is still not restored to battle worthiness, and I have held it back.

I don't know for certain but I suspect that during the previous evening Ian finally became aware of the extent of my manoeuvre and I may have missed my chance. As the Union army is moving around far less due to it's interior lines, it has probably been able to allocate more command points to scouting and keep fairly accurate tabs on what the Rebs are doing. So Lee now faces a substantial enemy line arrayed north of Sharpeville. He could continue to slip westwards, go for a frontal assault at an advantageous spot, or pin Pope down while Longstreet tries to turn his eastern flank - answers on a postcard please !Dry Stonewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980592495958797602noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1906649324146622178.post-41643078583542997292013-04-16T03:11:00.000-07:002013-04-16T03:11:10.878-07:00Sharpeville Campaign - Turn 15

I have managed to get most of the army into a good position north east of Sharpeville, and have detected Butterfield's division of Porter's (troublesome!) corps at the Cutler House. Because only cavalry can scout diagonally adjacent squares I am hoping that Jackson's presence has not been spotted by Butterfield. More worrying is Tompkin's cavalry near the Stevensburg Turnpike - they seem to have just appeared and I don't know how much of our northward movement they have become aware of. I need to drive them away, or at least 'confuse' them a bit next turn !

It would seem that Ian may have guessed by now that I didn't head south and west, so there could be all sorts of trouble in store for the morning . . .

Following the Confederate defeat at Sharpeville, Lee eventually decided to retire his forces to the east and position them along the Stevensburg turnpike, From there he can move them south or north quickly at a much smaller Command Point cost.

A plan is forming in my mind that actually involves - doing nothing for a while! If Lee can avoid Pope's cavalry patrols then a prolonged period of Confederate 'invisibility' might suggest to Pope that we have taken the long road south then west to move against Fremont, the other VP site. This is a fairly flimsy plan and Ian may not fall for it ! But if he does shift his weight towards Fremont then I could conceivably hook around Sharpeville to the north and try for a battle in the same general area as before, with more favourable odds if possible - and a better state of mind! In the long term it might be better to goad the Union army into attacking us, and fight a defensive battle . . . .

During this lull I will also begin attempts to restore the status of Anderson's division (marker currently white to indicate 'battle weary') and give General Wilcox command of the division formerly led by the now deceased General Kemper.Dry Stonewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980592495958797602noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1906649324146622178.post-4215414286620375792013-04-13T07:02:00.000-07:002013-04-13T07:02:04.863-07:00Sharpeville Campaign - Turn 10

The Battle of Sharpeville is over - and it was pretty much an unmitigated disaster for the Rebs!
See http://wargameswithmybrother.blogspot.co.uk for a blow by blow account.

Confusion and doubt about the whereabouts of Pope's largest corps led me into a paralysis which unfortunately coincided with some assertive tactical play by Ian. The divisions of Hood and Starke never fired a shot, and by some appalling incompetence that I don't even fully understand myself, the majority of Confederate artillery remained limbered up and useless for the duration of the battle! Rebel army demoralisation (6 simultaneously broken units) was reached after playing just 8 tabletop turns - our final session consisting of 1 turn only! Map moves have resumed with campaign turn 10 commencing at the time that the battle ended - 3pm.

In short - Jackson's corps was severely damaged in defence, Longstreet's was crippled in attack, and I was hampered by over-confidence alternating with baseless paranoia.

By mid afternoon, the Army of Northern Virginia was in full retreat, and Ian had recieved 5 Campaign Victory Points for winning the battle. During Longstreet's disastrous assault it was Anderson's Division that took the heaviest losses and is now designated 'battle weary' in campaign terms. Kemper was killed in the chaos when his men broke in the woods, so a replacement will need to be found to command his division. I have started to extricate my army from the battlefield with a view to retiring southwards and having a serious re-think. If I lose a second battle then victory goes to that dreadful character, General Pope . . . . .

General Lee shares his thoughts about the battle currently in progress at Sharpeville.

(see http://wargameswithmybrother.blogspot.co.uk/). The time is 12:30 pm (turn 4).

"General Jackson has been hit hard by Heintzelman's Corps at Barnes Farm, but despite the firepower of massed Federal batteries, I have faith that he will hold his ground - Starkes' entire division remains in reserve. However, I am perturbed by the likelihood that General Porter's Corps will fall on Jackson's northern flank within the next hour or so. Stuart had formerly reported Porter's presence in the area, but has since lost track of him. Jackson's flank is refused with Ambrose Hill's division deployed against the possibility of Porter's appearance. I intend to bolster that position with Starke's brigades and Walker's reserve batteries - maybe even General Hood if need be. A new line may need to be drawn a little further south.

My chief hope lies with General Longstreet who has reported a moderate enemy force to his front, near Hawk Ridge - I have ordered him to assault those people with all haste then wheel north to relieve the pressure on Jackson.

It was indeed a calculated risk to accede to battle here at Sharpeville while the threat of Porter remained unresolved, but at this moment we outnumber the enemy substantially and must be bold . . . "

Pope has taken me a little off guard by advancing aggressively against Jackson - but, although I know Porter's Corps is just off to the northwest, I feel that Lee's army is in a strong position so the Confederates are standing their ground ! This means that a table battle is declared, with me as the defender deciding the precise geographical area of the battlefield as shown below . . . .
The Union army now gets a small bonus phase with limited command points to 'march to guns' any of their units beyond the area of the battlefield. Campaign moves are suspended until the battle is over, and a full report of the action at Sharpeville will appear on : http://wargameswithmybrother.blogspot.co.uk/ ........ as soon as we can get to fight it !Dry Stonewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05980592495958797602noreply@blogger.com0
